Letters for Linny! (ReneaBouquets "Initial" Swap)

Linny's Initials - for the ReneaBouquets Initial Swap hosted by Donna (bonprof) over at scrapbook.com!
At the start of the swap, when we exchanged addresses, Linny told me her craft room was mauve, burgundy, pink, green, and cream, so I tried to make it so her letters would match her already established decor! (She told me they would go well in her craft room, so mission accomplished!)

Below you'll find the process video, some close up photos, and the full product list!

Butterfly Lights

"Butterfly Lights"
In honor of her one year anniversary of Tres Jolie Kit Club, Kim had an online (Facebook) crop! The first challenge posted was a "bingo" challenge, and this is what I made using [most of] the products that came in the Tres Jolie June Mixed Media Kit!

Challenge #1 Scrapbook Bingo: Complete a project (card, scrapbook page, altered project, etc) using the any of the items list in a row. That row can be straight or diagonal. Upload your project to the Crop challenge file by Midnight (CST) tomorrow [June 9, 2019] for a chance to win a prize. You don't have to use one of our kits, but it would be nice to see (just no promoting any other kits).
The row with the yellow box is my "BINGO!"
The breakdown:

  • Watercolor: I know, I know. HOW is there watercolor on there?!?! It was messy, but I added Concentrated Watercolors by Art Philosophy to the project (on top of the Acrylic Modeling Paste, which is where the Mod Podge Acrylic Sealer came in! I used it to keep those watercolors in place after they dried!!)
  • Twine/String: Jute String by Tim Holtz on the top knob
  • Wire: Wire lights by Prima
  • Beads: Teal Glass Beautiful Beads by ReneaBouquets
  • Glitter: Diamond Chunky Glitter Glass by ReneaBouquets
The good news, I've managed to (finally) make my computer capable of recording videos!
The bad news? I haven't edited the video for this project yet! (limited project submission time and all)
BUT...I'm going to edit it! I swear!!

UPDATE: I finished the editing...sorta. I mean, there's video, but no sound [Update #2: I added music after my son said it was "creepily quiet" LOL!]. By the time I "dealt" with my computer I was too tired of trying. Plus, it's been many, many years since I've played with video editing, and I am still trying to get my groove back! As I continue recording projects I do, the videos should theoretically improve...but for now, here is the video that has had almost 4 hours shaved off!

Here are some photos!

A closer look at the top.

Altered Box - ReneaBouquet May Swap!

Altered 'cigar' box for the May 2019 ReneaBouquet Facebook Swap!
**Someone mentioned the word 'tutorial,' and I'll try that here as best I can...

I do have a computer and a webcam and everything, BUT in early 2018 the power supply on my computer fried itself...I mean there were sparks and everything! And well my computer works well enough-ish, I'm pretty sure the motherboard took some damage because it hasn't been quite right since (and my webcam tends to overpower it now). All this happened right before we moved almost 2300 miles, so getting my computer back to 100% hasn't been a priority! (Although dealing with it being like 85% is starting to get on my nerves A LOT!)**

Ok...the short and sweet "tutorial."

I used Art Glitter Adhesive to hold the papers to the wood. The lid has the 13 @rts paper, and the bottom is only wrapped on the sides with the Hip Kit Club paper (the bottom of the box is just white gesso). I used quite a bit of glue, basically "painting" a thin layer where it would be touching the paper and burnishing it down with the edge of my bone folder and some elbow grease. And I let it dry a full day before moving on to the next layer!

I did not gesso my paper, gesso is wet and I found that to be a risk I didn't want to take! I used Krylon Workable Fixative as a protective coating before gluing down the Mould pieces, flowers, 7 Gypsies doilies, and ReneaBouquet Grid Beautiful Board. All of these parts, except the Beautiful Board which has it's own coating, needed gesso before the next step.

Next I did the bits of embossing.

Now, the really wet, "please let the glue and Krylon work their best," part! First, I had to spritz water where I was planning on adding all those Lindy's & Jaquard powders, then I had to add more water on top of the powders! I did heat dry, and there is more than one layer of powders (Between the layers I used more Krylon Workable Fixative so there would be no reactivation of the lower levels!). I did the same technique along the sides of the bottom, except there was only one layering of powders. And, because I heat dry the powders, it reheated the embossing powder which caused it to push it's way through in spots!!

Now, to help everything withstand being used, there is three (I think) coats of (Mod Podge) acrylic sealer. Some is glossy, some is matte. Yes, I did it that way on purpose!

After all that was dry I added the feet, hinges, and latch, then the butterflies and cabachon.

*The cabachon is a 50mm dome on top of a piece from Tim Holtz's Botanical Layers & a ReneaBouquet butterfly, adhered with JudiKins Diamond Glaze. The edges are done with Finnabair waxes, White Gold & Peacock.*

On the inside of the box I used Mod Podge Vintage to glue the Prima tissue paper in place then let that dry. After the Mod Podge dried I randomly added spots of color with the Finnabair Waxes and coated the edge of the lid and bottom with Finnabair wax. And everything is coated in acrylic sealer to (hopefully) add durability.

Art Daily Journal Cover

For the months of May and June, Tres Jolie Kit Club is going to be working on the Finnabair Art Daily Journal! Which is why the May Cards, Tags, & More kit contained the 58 Piece Journal Cover Set, plus Finnnabair's Victorian Bookmarks & Sentiment's Stickers!

I decided to at least make the cover look like I planned on being productive!! I mean, it is the last day of the month and I didn't actually get any of the "Daily" part done like I told myself I would "just as soon as I finished the cover."

Lots of mixed media products on here, and not all of the glue is dried or the Heavy Body Gel, but it was dry enough to take photos!

First I took all the elastics off the journal so I could coat it in black gesso, then I figured out what was going to be the decoration after browsing my stash...so after I glued all the base pieces down I gessoed (<---is that even a word?!?!) again!

I was going to just paint the cover with DWM's Olive, but I saw my dylusion's Chopped Pesto and decided to combine the two! They aren't mixed together, I just dipped half my brush in one color and the other half in the second color. As I layered and built up the paint I would alternate colors or use both together again.

After the paint dried I started working on my rust effect paste, starting with Brown and finishing with Rusty.

As for the metal flowers; I gave them a coating of gesso and let it dry, then I spritzed them with water, randomly sprinkled the Perfect Pearls & Magical Shaker's on them, spritzed them with water again, then heat dried. To help keep the coating in place I gave them a spray with acrylic sealer. (All this was done on my work surface, before attaching them to the cover!!)

To finish I placed all the flowers to my liking, and gave a light coating of Metallique Wax to the edges of the cover!

OH! The Tim Holtz Adornment on the spine (that I used to cover the original hole since I relocated the closure!) ... it was gessoed, painted with Metallique Fresh Orange Acrylic Paint, then coated with the Firebird Wax!

Imagine (4"x12" Canvas)

"Imagine" created for the Mixed Media Place April (2019) Challenge!

I LOVED the colors of the mood board this month, and I'm not even the biggest fan of pinks! Besides the colors, the mushroom put me in a fantasy mindset, when for me equals fairies!!

I don't have a lot of rhyme or reason with this canvas, and originally I had hoped to recreate the mushroom...somehow...but as it so often happens, the project took on a life of it's own! The pink tree is actually a photo I took, ran through Photoshop, printed on regular paper, and transferred! It didn't transfer quite how I had planned, so I had to get "creative" with the Shimmerz paste! 😂

The fairy was black chipboard, but I used some white gesso before painting it with the Pink-Blue Opal Magic and adding a T-H-I-N coat of the Peacock Metallique Wax!

Transition

"Transition" - My entry to the February Mixed Media Place Challenge
When I first saw the challenge board for the February Mixed Media Place Challenge I was immediately drawn to the mushroom. I don't know why, but I love mushrooms...artistically. For food I can tolerate them to an extent. A very small extent! (except the white 'button' mushrooms, those are just a big ol' NO!). Okay, that's all besides the point, so back to my canvas.

I loved the color of the mushroom, and I am so over winter that I had no desire to do a winter themed project, but I also love the sepia of the top left photo, the close up of the water drop (I think that's what it is) in the top center photo, and the color of the leaves of the top right photo. The mushroom and the three top photos were my main inspiration for my project. At first I had thought I would somehow use mushrooms, but after I did the paint pour I realized I needed something more. I don't know how I came around to gears and rust paste, but it was something like this:

"I like the sepia and gold leaves, they look old. Those leaves look metallic. Rust is old. I have rust pastes. I also have some gold wax...and some metal flowers...and I made a bunch of resin gears & butterflies to have on hand..."

Basically, I think in run-on and/or incomplete sentences. The thoughts just go sometimes, and this time I went them!

I added the cabochon's because the white space needed something, but I didn't need more color! (Plus, they are what I thought of with the top middle photo!)

Always

My sons ... a few (13!) years ago!
For the month of February the More than Words Challenge was "Always & Quote." My favorite quote of all time is by Helen Keller, "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be see or even touch - they must be felt with the heart." The greatest of all emotions is Love, and I don't think there is a greater love than parental love - Always.
February 2019 More Than Words Main Challenge
A quick overview of what I did:
  • I first coated the Creative Embellishments Heart Flourish in the Prima Pastes and set it aside to dry.
  • I started with some clear gesso on the background, then added the stenciling & embossing.
  • All parts from the Prima Mould were coated in black gesso, then Bronze Age wax...and I just started stacking and arranging and gluing the ReneaBouquets Grid with the gears...And hoping for the best! LOL!
  • Then the pastes ... layering and mixing and blending and watering down and building back up and drying ... and doing it all over again!
  • The hearts & "Always" were both coated in black gesso, but the hearts only have Electric Violet Metallique Wax & "Always" has a mix of Electric Violet, Old Denim, and Mint Sparkle on top of Bronze Age.
